Once upon a time...

...there was a land manager who wanted to understand the fuels and potential fire behavior on their landscape better. They knew that understanding their landscape better would help them make better management decisions and help them communicate those decisions with the public and policy makers in their area. Here are the steps that they took (these steps will be updated and added to as new material is available).
The first steps involve becoming familiar with LANDFIRE data.  Read up on the product at LANDFIRE.gov or watch videos on the LANDFIRE YouTube Channel. The following steps are outlined in the document How-to: Process LANDFIRE data.
1. Acquire LANDFIRE data
  - Download data for fire modeling from LANDFIRE.gov
  - Save to your ArcPro project
If working in IFTDSS you can download a landscape into the program without going to LANDFIRE.gov.   See "Landscape reports with IFTDSS" linked to below to see a demonstration on getting a landscape created
2. Assess LANDFIRE fuels layers - Perform some or all of the 12 steps to evaluating LANDFIRE data. Written instructions for these steps are in the How-to guide linked to above.

Video 1: 12 Steps to Evaluating LANDFIRE data - Overview of the evaluation process.

Video 2: Landscape Reports with IFTDSS
  1. Create Landscape summary report
  2. Run fire behavior and create a summary report
  3. Import a shapefile
  4. Organize screen captures in a word document
  5. Compare to fire behavior from comparemodelsfour spreadsheet
  6. Compare for two different weather scenarios by exporting data into Excel
  7. Download results from IFTDSS

Video 3: Evaluating LANDFIRE's Non-burnable Pixels with IFTDSS and ArcPro
  1. Using IFTDSS to view Fuel Model data
  2. Using ArcGIS Pro to pull out selected pixels in a raster
3. Gather weather information - This is in preparation for fire modeling. You will need to know what weather to use as inputs. Detailed instructions for Fire Family Plus can be found on How-to: Use Fire Family Plus document
  1. Download weather data
  2. Import into Fire Family Plus
  3. Run climatology
  4. Change the analysis period
  5. Use overlays
  6. Create merged graphs
  7. Create wind rose
  8. Gather weather for a percentile
  9. Gather weather for a certain day
4. Assess Fire Behavior produced  using LANDFIRE data - Using IFTDSS and FlamMap6 you can create fire behavior output and assess how it matches with your experience or historic fire data. Detailed information on FlamMap6 can be found on How-to: Use FlamMap.

Video 1: Gathering Data for Historic Fire Analysis with FlamMap
  1. Identify a representative fire near your project area
  2. Identify the day that is a good candidate for fire modeling using IFTDSS
  3. Download LANDFIRE data for BEFORE the fire
  4. Download the weather data
  5. Identify the weather inputs for the day of the fire
Video 2: Modeling Fire Spread with FlamMap 6
  1. Importing LCP
  2. Create a weather stream file (WXS) with FFP
  3. Create a fuel moisture file (.FMS)
  4. Generate basic fire behavior
  5. Import polygon
  6. Create ignition file
  7. Generate fire spread with FlamMap
  8. Generate fire spread with Farsite
Video 3: From IFTDSS to FlamMap 6 and ArcPro
  1. Create a landscape in IFTDSS
  2. Download a landscape in IFTDSS and open in FlamMap6
  3. Generate basic fire behavior in IFTDSS
  4. Import into ArcPro as a GeoTiff
  5. Reclassify portions of the GeoTiff into Rasters
